What is FCT?
Family Centered Treatment (FCT) was developed as a model of treatment for use in the provision of intensive in-home services. FCT origins derive
from practitioners' efforts to find simple, common sense solutions for families faced with forced removal of their children from the home or dissolution of the family due to external and internal stressors and circumstances. Out of a desire and mission to create opportunity for lasting change for families that were seemingly stuck in a downward spiral, grew a practice approach that is non-traditional, yet grounded in the use of treatment components that are sound and research-based. Eco-Structural Family Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and the Peers Helping Peers model provide the theoretical framework from which FCT has developed.

How does it Work?
Family Centered Treatment is a multifaceted, systemic model. FCT clinicians conduct an intensive Family Centered Evaluation during the first 30 days. During that time FCT clinicians also join with parents to support them in regaining authority in the home. It is in this profound therapeutic relationship that clinicians are given permission to restructure destructive family behaviors/patterns and assist the family in behaving in accordance to their identified family goals. These new family behaviors are practiced repeatedly, challenged, and woven into the family's way of relating to each other and to the outside world.
Finally, families are given the opportunity to give back to their community, thereby generalizing and strengthening their new skills and commitment to growth and stability.

The Four Phases of Family Centered Treatment
01
Joining & Assessment
FCT clinicians respond quickly to referral, engaging families when they are more likely to be motivated to examine and change interactions. The focus is on building trust.
03
Sustainability
Sustainable change in a family system occurs when the behavioral changes made during restructuring are valued and seen as necessary by the family.
02
Practice Phase
Goals determined during the initial phase guide the family to negotiate tasks associated with daily living, eventually becoming regular rules of interacting. Practicing is the key to success.
04
Evaluation
Family progression determines the timing of closure using a detailed process that evaluates changes made and the family's ability to use strategies independently.
